1994 Excelsior Award Recipients

Patricia β€œAnn” Marshall Sims and Melvin Sims were the first recipients of the Marshall-Horton Excelsior Award under the Performance in the Community category for providing service and support to family members directly affected by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

Hurricane Andrew made landfall around 5 am in Homestead, Florida, on August 24, 1992, with sustained wind speeds maxing out at 165 mph. It is still one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in US History. Andrew developed into a Category-5 hurricane in no more than 36 hours, roaring across south Florida and decimating the urban landscape in its wake. Not only did the storm reconfigure much of south Florida, causing an estimated $26.5 billion in direct damages in 1992, it also directly affected the lives of many Marshall-Horton Family members whose homes laid in its path.

As soon as the storm passed and she heard of the devastation her family members were experiencing, Ann jumped into action. The moment she was able to drive to South Florida from Orlando, FL she did, providing physical, emotional, and financial support to her loved ones. Her ongoing efforts included helping families navigate through their house insurance policies, supplying meals and clothing, and opening her home to family members who needed relief during their most vulnerable hours.

On this day, we honor the legacy of Ann Marshall and her undying love for her family. Thank you for your love and support!
